Robin Mathew Q.C.
Call: 1974  Silk: 1992

Robin Mathew was called to the Bar in 1974 and took silk in 1992. Before coming to the Bar, he was a City journalist with leading national newspapers, and freelance.

At all times his practice at the Bar has been founded on his experience and expertise in tax. In terms of advocacy and paperwork he covers both corporate and personal tax issues. The practical emphasis is on income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, VAT and customs and excise duties. Peripheral indirect taxes such as stamp, and other specific duties, are also covered.

His advisory and advocacy practice extends to resolving tax–based problems faced by commercial, private and charitable trusts as well as insolvency practitioners.

He has appeared in many leading tax, and related, cases both for the taxpayer and the revenue authorities. In addition, he has long experience and expertise in "back duty" tax cases, negligence by tax advisers, including solicitors and accountants, and judicial review of the tax-gathering authorities. In international work, he has made a number of appearances before the Privy Council as well as in other common law jurisdictions. He is a member of the Gibraltar Bar.
