Edwin Simpson
Call: 1990
Edwin Simpson was called to the Bar in 1990. He appears frequently at Public Inquiries considering Highway matters, Town and Village Greens, and the mapping of access land pursuant to Countryside Act 2000; and advises in connection with all aspects of such work. Recent instructions concerning access land have included consideration of the mapping of claimed "heath" and "down" in England, and consequent judicial review proceedings before the High Court and the Court of Appeal to quash determinations of the Countryside Agency. In the Highway context, he frequently represents both users and landowners at lengthy Public Inquiries considering detailed documentary and old map evidence as well as contemporary evidence of user; and in the High Court and on appeal in judicial review proceedings challenging consequent Decision Letters of the Secretary of State or an appointed Inspector. He has also sat as a non-statutory 'Inspector' in the context of applications by the public in connection with 'Town and Village Greens', and has frequently appeared, again on behalf of both claimants and landowners, before such tribunals. In addition, he teaches law at Christ Church, Oxford where, as well as interests in public law, he maintains an interest in the fields of trusts and tax and lectures on the Oxford B.C.L. on tax avoidance. He is an editor of the new edition of Lewin on Trusts and is a contributor to The Law of Freedom of Information, which was published by O.U.P. in March 2003.
