Edwin Simpson was called to the Bar in 1990. He appears frequently at Public Inquiries considering Highway matters, Town and Village Greens, and the mapping of access land pursuant to Countryside Act 2000; and advises in connection with all aspects of such work. He also has expertise concerning common land generally, and many other aspects of countryside law, such as the ownership of hedges, ditches and even reservoir walls.
He frequently represents users, landowners and public authorities at lengthy Public Inquiries considering detailed documentary and old map evidence as well as contemporary evidence of user; and in the High Court and on appeal in judicial review proceedings challenging consequent decisions of the Secretary of State or an appointed Inspector. He has also sat as a non-statutory 'Inspector' in the context of applications by the public in connection with Town and Village Greens, and has frequently appeared, again on behalf of both claimants and landowners, before such tribunals.
In addition, he teaches law at Christ Church, Oxford where, as well as interests in public law, he maintains an interest in the fields of trusts and tax and lectures on the Oxford BCL on capital taxation and judicial approaches to tax avoidance. He is a contributor to The Law of Freedom of Information, (Macdonald et al, 2nd ed 2009) and has recently published Sham Transactions (ed. Simpson and Stewart, OUP 2014).
