Practice Overview


Christopher Semken has a broad practice which includes all aspects of real property, landlord and tenant, probate, trusts and administration of estates, professional negligence, partnership and Club law. He is a keen yachtsman who served for many years as a member of a committee of the Royal Yachting Association dealing with legal and parliamentary issues relating to the sport and has advised professionally in relation to rights of navigation and in disputes between sports and their members.

      Christopher Semken’s real property practice is wide ranging, including in particular mortgages, easements, restrictive covenants, contracts for the sale and purchase of land and conveyancing disputes.  He also frequently advises and acts in landlord and tenant matters, relating both to private and commercial tenancies.  He is a keen yachtsman who served for many years as a member of a Committee of the Royal Yachting Association dealing with legal and parliamentary matters relating to the sport, and has advised professionally in relation to rights of navigation on rivers and has actual in several disputes between yacht clubs and their members.

      Professional Negligence

      Christopher Semken’s professional negligence practice is wide, encompassing claims arising out of property transactions the administration of trusts and estates, and also claims against accountants.  He acted for the defendant solicitor in the long-running Perotti v Watson litigation, a claim arising out of the administration and distribution of a large estate comprising overseas assets not declared for tax, and raising issues as to the duties of an attorney administrator, particularly in relation to the collection of foreign debts and negotiating tax settlements with the Revenue.  He has also acted for the defendant accountants in claims arising out of audit work and unsuccessful tax avoidance claims.  In recent years he has increasingly been instructed to advise in relation to pre-litigation negotiations and to represent clients at mediations.

    • Probate and Trusts

      Christopher Semken advises and acts in a wide range of probate and trust matters, including claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants Act) 1975, most of which are resolved by way of mediation.  In recent years he has also been increasingly instructed in disputes relating to Lasting and Enduring Powers of Attorney, where his practical approach has often enabled the parties to each workable and cost effective solutions without incurring the expense of litigation.
