Predatory marriage and reform of the Wills Act 1837

14 Dec 2021

Fabian Hamilton MP attended the Ministry of Justice yesterday to present a legislative proposal on behalf of the campaign to end predatory marriage.

New Square Chambers' James McKean and Andrew Bishop of Shoosmiths LLP were in attendance.  They have been advising the campaign on reform of the Wills Act 1837.  The campaign hopes that amending section 18 of the Act may remove the financial incentive of predatory spouses.  Also in attendance was campaigner Daphne Franks.  Mrs Franks' late mother was married to a much younger man while in a state of dementia.  The new husband inherited her entire estate and received full control of her burial.
